Mitsuko's Vineyard’s vines are now the heart and soul of Clos Pegase Winery, producing six of the eight wines Clos Pegase releases nationally each year. The 2009 vintage marks not only 20 years since that gift was bestowed, but also 40 years since the Shrems were married in Switzerland.
It might be interesting to talk to them about tips for keeping a happy marriage going and the role this vineyard has played in their relationship over the years. This year, the Shrems will also celebrate 25 years since their first vintage of Clos Pegase, as well as Jan's 79th birthday in July.
Current releases from Clos Pegase Mitsuko's Vineyard in Carneros are all packaged under screw-cap closures. Clos Pegase Mitsuko's Sauvignon Blanc 2007 ($20) is supple and vibriant and offers notes of gooseberry, hay, grapefuit and melon. Clos Pegase Mitsuko's Chardonnay 2006 ($24) is rich and densely textured with notes of nectarine, peach, pear and spicy oak. Clos Pegase Mitsuko's Merlot 2005 ($27) is an elegant and lush wine with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, cherry, licorice, and cocoa.
Shrem chose Hommage as the name for Clos Pegase’s reserve wines as a tribute to the memory of the artist whose painting graces the label—and to the artisans, growers, enologists, craftsmen and workers whose efforts are reflected in the wines at Clos Pegase. Each year the Shrems proudly choose a different work of art from their extensive collection to be reproduced on the Hommage label. The label for the Clos Pegase Hommage Chardonnay Mitusko's 2006 ($43) pays Hommage to artist Roberto Matta. The wine is golden in color with aromas of apple, pear, peach, lemon and caramel that lead to opulent flavors of lemon cream, butterscotch and pear.
