Piggly Wiggly has a heritage that is local. The stores are locally owned and operated. And many of the products are grown or produced locally and regionally. They are also known for their wine departments. What to pair with the standing rib roast in your cart? No problem. Their friendly wine stewards have just the bottle. Need a discount on case wines? Get 10 percent off 12 bottles or any six magnums—and a five percent discount on half case purchases. Want a wine for a special occasion? They can typically get it in 48 hours.
Now Piggly Wiggly’s Ajlouny and Virciglio families are releasing their own wine labels, bottled by Curly Tail Cellars in Santa Rosa, California. Squeal, the first of the three labels, was released in August 2010. The Squeal lineup includes three California wines: Chardonnay 2009, Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 and Merlot 2008. Squeal Chardonnay is medium in body and lemon yellow in color with notes of vanilla, butterscotch, and buttered toast. Squeal Merlot 2008 is deep red with ruby hues and notes of strawberry, plum and dried herbs. Squeal Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 is dark crimson in color with notes of blackberry, plum and leather. All three wines are delightful and priced at $9.99. But Piggly Wiggly is not stopping here. Coming soon are two more labels—Pigasus and Grand Sooeé!
